I have a friend who loves hot wings and he’d
eat at this little dive at least once a week. Over
time, he developed a relationship with one of the
waitresses there. Through that relationship, he learned
about her struggles to provide for her family as a
waitress. At Christmas, he brought her a $50 gift
certificate to a local grocery store…not out
of pity…out of concern and relationship. There’s
another woman I know who works out at the local Bally’s
here in town and leaves her children in the child-care
center. She befriended one of the workers, and spent
time talking to her before and after her workouts.
Through that relationship, my friend decided it would
be nice to give her a birthday present, so she got
her a gift card to Target. I’ve never been a
fan of “random” acts of kindness. They
come across as pity and false piety. Get to know someone
in your life—like a waitress or childcare worker—and
then practice deliberate acts of kindness that flow
out of your relationship.
| The great thing about
this list is that you can add anything you want to it. In fact, I’ve
put a little form below that I want you to come up with other ideas and
suggestions for our community of people. And, as an added bonus, if you
send me a picture of you with one of America’s 39 million hardworking
men or women, I’ll send you a FREE book to give to them. We’ll
post your names and pictures here in our Transformation Hall of Fame.
Thanks and good
luck!
